So I am obsessed with Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Last night he did a lesson about healthy/unhealthy snacking and the effect that it has long-term on you. This includes a math lesson for a group of students. They are each given a snack to eat that includes either a candy bar, orange, soda, or pizza (they are allowed to choose which snack they get). After they select the snack, they head out to the track. Depending on how many calories are in each snack, that is how many laps they have to do around the track in order to burn off these calories. Here is the breakdown for each snack:
1. Orange (62 calories) 3 laps (about 3/4 miles)
2. Soda (140 calories) 7 laps
3. Pizza (149 calories) 8 laps
4. Candy Bar (220 calories) 11 laps (nearly 3 miles!)
He had them wear a backpack with either 20 pounds (girl) or 30 pounds (boy) that they would gain in three months (I think?) if they didn't exercise and ate like that all the time. They had to wear the backpacks while they were doing their laps around the track. I think it would be cool to do that but I think it would work great without the backpacks too. It's in the first 10 minutes of the show. Sorry but it won't let me only put a clip on here. Don't know why.
Jaclyn!!! This is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaclyn! I've been trying to think about ways to incorporate health topics (other than physical activity) into a PE setting and this would be great! I would want to consider that this may give the idea of "eating whatever you want as long as you burn it off" so I'd want to couple it with something about getting enough of the nutrients you need in food. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletelove that show!
