Body Systems Lesson Ideas
My husband and I just went to the BODIES Exhibit here in New York and had such a fun time learning more about the human body "up close and personal". I was browsing through the exhibit's website and came upon a series of teacher's guides for the exhibit, specific to different age groups (grades 6-8, grades 9-12, etc). It has some great lesson plans about the body systems that can be done without going to the exhibit. My students loved learning about the background scientific information about the health issues we discussed this semester and I think some of these would be fun in the classroom.

Bullying and Suicide
One of my students actually found these clips for me. I LOVED them!!
Jonah: He made this video before starting the 8th grade because he was upset and worried about being bullied. He talks about suicide and his option to be strong and ends his video with "I have a million reasons to be here." I took this statement and made it my main idea for my two days on suicide. I showed the beginning of the clip until he says that he is starting the 8th grade, then I fast forwarded it to 3:17 and watched it to the end.

This 2nd video I showed on the bullying day. This video is a response to Jonah's video and is about stopping bullying. I showed the whole thing.

ha ha. yeah, kids are great! i hope everyone is surviving! i've wanted to post so many times and then find myself ITCHING for more time! but, it's time. here are some websites that i L O V E. they have saved me so many times with lesson planning.
that one has lesson plans on it!!! woot woot.
that one you can copy and paste info straight from the source! it was made for teens. awesome, awesome.
that one is a personalized nutrition plan. and it's FREE!! if you did that plus this one...
it would be a great day in the computer lab. i don't know about you, but i love the computer lab.
also, for any of you sick of the kids making posters, have you heard of http://edu.glogster.com/? it's an on-line poster website. and it's specifically for educators. it's great! would be SUPER fun to do a positivity lesson and have the kids make positivity posters. also, if you have makes with camera's at your school, the students LOVE using the cameras. have them take pictures and put them on the posters! but, you'll have to teach them how to do it first. not everyone is as computer savy as we all now are. thank you ip&t.
here's a fun idea for optimism...do you think you could do this another way in your classroom???
and another...you'd have to cut it off before he starts talking about God, but it's great!
also, want a good video about the media??
hope something helped ya! xo

TWS
Hey all!
Hope everything is going well!
For those of you who are student teaching right now, has Cougar given out an outline on what's supposed to be in the last sections of our Teacher Work Sample? If so, could someone send me those?
Thanks!
Aubrey

Nutrition Idea
I've been working on my Nutrition unit and wanted to talk a little about the mental issues people who overeat/are obese sometimes have. I remembered a video Taylor and I did back in 381 when we talked about sugar intake. I wanted to share it because I think there's a lot to pull from it. You can talk about the mental aspect, the sugar intake stuff, etc. Taylor and I showed from 2:17-4:25 when we talked about sugar intake.

Wellness questionnaire
Hey guys!
I'm taking a class here in Oregon at the Community College. We had to fill out a couple questionnaires about our Health. I thought this would be a great first day activity!
I thought this was pretty cool!

Nutrition Lesson Idea
So I am obsessed with Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Last night he did a lesson about healthy/unhealthy snacking and the effect that it has long-term on you. This includes a math lesson for a group of students. They are each given a snack to eat that includes either a candy bar, orange, soda, or pizza (they are allowed to choose which snack they get). After they select the snack, they head out to the track. Depending on how many calories are in each snack, that is how many laps they have to do around the track in order to burn off these calories. Here is the breakdown for each snack:
1. Orange (62 calories) 3 laps (about 3/4 miles)
2. Soda (140 calories) 7 laps
3. Pizza (149 calories) 8 laps
4. Candy Bar (220 calories) 11 laps (nearly 3 miles!)
He had them wear a backpack with either 20 pounds (girl) or 30 pounds (boy) that they would gain in three months (I think?) if they didn't exercise and ate like that all the time. They had to wear the backpacks while they were doing their laps around the track. I think it would be cool to do that but I think it would work great without the backpacks too. Here's the link on hulu:

It's in the first 10 minutes of the show. Sorry but it won't let me only put a clip on here. Don't know why.

Squished Pyramid - Now Myplate?
Breaking News...
http://blogs.indystar.com/varvelblog/2011/06/03/americas-diet/ |
In my way home from Health 436 today I read in the Daily Universe that the Food Pyramid has been replaced with a new icon - MyPlate! First of all, I was excited that the Daily Universe was printing something about health. Now I wonder, will this help the public? Will this change the way I teach or that others teach and will it be more effective? What do you all think? Here are a few resources:

New Health Ed Blog!
Hey guys!
As Emily mentioned in class, she had this great idea to start a blog for our major!
We're trying to make everyone authors and admins of this blog. I've only got emails from people who were in 421 the day we did this. If you know anyone else in our major, please make sure they can become authors of the blog. We want to have everyone contribute!
If you want, comment on this post with a link to your personal blog.
